An Overview of Accutane Ulcerative Colitis And Accutane Crohns Disease Lawsuits

Thousands of people who used anti-acne medication Accutane ended up suffering from far worse problems than pimples: ulcerative colitis, Crohn’s disease, inflammatory bowel disease, and other serious Accutane related side effects. Since the drug was removed from the market in 2009, more than 7,000 plaintiffs have filed lawsuits against manufacturer Hoffman-LaRoche and its parent company, Roche AG. Here’s a look at some of the most notable Accutane lawsuits, past and present.
“Twin Peaks” actor loses, but co-plaintiff wins
The most well-known plaintiff was actor James Marshall, who played James Hurley on the TV series “Twin Peaks”. Marshall and co-plaintiff Gillian Gaghan filed their lawsuit in 2006, both claiming that they suffered from ulcerative colitis resulting from Accutane use.
Marshall lost his case because he had previously suffered from an intestinal problem when he was 18, so the jury did not feel that it was proven conclusively that Accutane was the sole cause of Marshall’s current health problems. However, Gaghan did win her case, and was awarded $2 million in damages.
Highest damages ever awarded to Accutane plaintiff
Andrew McCarrell sued Hoffman-LaRoche after he was diagnosed with ulcerative colitis (the diagnosis was later changed to Crohn’s disease) and his case went to trial in 2007. The jury awarded him $2 million, but Roche managed to get the trial overturned because the drug manufacturer had not been allowed to present evidence about the total number of Accutane users. So a second trial was held in 2010. This time, McCarrell was awarded $25 million – the highest damages ever awarded to an Accutane plaintiff. Roche again filed to have the verdict overturned, but Judge Carol E. Higbee denied the motion, so the verdict stands.
Three plaintiffs win in combined lawsuit
In 2008, three Florida lawsuits raising similar allegations went to trial, and all three plaintiffs won. Jordan Speisman, Lance Sager, and Kelly Mace all took Accutane for their acne when they were adolescents. Years later, they were all diagnosed with inflammatory bowel disease resulting from accutane. The jury awarded them a total of 2.89 million in damages: $8.5 to Speisman, $2.5 million to Sager, and .5 million to Mace.
Mass Tort and MDL: Combining Thousands of Lawsuits Into One
Looking to the future, thousands of lawsuits are now part of an ongoing mass tort in Atlantic County in New Jersey, and more may join: on Jan. 18, 2012, the judge in charge of the mass tort, Judge Carol E. Higbee, extended the deadline for the sixth wave of core discovery for the mass tort. Numerous other cases have been consolidated into an MDL (multi-district litigation) in Florida. Accutane attorneys and plaintiffs will be watching closely as these combined litigations unfold.

Freeze the gum utilizing and air duster (used for cleaning key boards) or ice. Chip the gum away and discard of the excess gum pieces. Apply a 1/4 teaspoon of Hydrogen Peroxide and work the gum stain with lightly abrasive sponge. - Ink’s
Drip a small amount of dish detergent on ink stain, apply light pressure with a moist towel. Next use hair spray, if ink is not completely removed then move to rubbing alcohol. Ink is tough to contain and remove so ink may require using rubbing alcohol or a professional cleaning solution. - Ketchup
Warm water and a few drop of dish soap will get the stain removal process started for Ketchup stains. Wait about 10 minutes and apply 3/4 cp of white vinegar accompanied with 1 cp of H2O. Apply absorbent towel with light pressure. Repeat steps for larger areas may be necessary. - Lipstick
Contain the lipstick stain by picking at the affected area with your finger nail. Next Apply rubbing alcohol and agitate lightly. Apply warm water and dab with clean towel. - Milk Chocolate Chocolate is a fairly easy stain to remove. Use water, dish soap and work with a clean towel.
- Mold/Mildew
Using a filtered vacuum suck up as much as you can with the hose tool. Do not use a brush tool as this may spread unwanted mold particles into your breathing air. Next apply ammonia or a non-bleach carpet chemical. Hydrogen peroxide can be used as substitute as well. blot. - Mustard
Lightly sponge a few drops of dish soap into infect area. Then apply small amount of vinegar and dry towel to absorb stain. - Pop
Soak up immediately with absorbent cloth. Apply club soda and then light pressure with a clean towel. may be the best emergency spotter to have on hand. - Wine
Lightly absorb excess liquid from carpet with clean towel. A combination of dish soap, 1 tsp carpet cleaning solution and or 1 cp of hydrogen peroxide. Absorb with clean towel or sponge. More than on cleaning process maybe necessary.
